- Write an outline or the text of what you want to say and practice saying it. Include information about yourself, homework, major assignments, field trips or anything that parents need to know about upcoming activities. It is always better to plan extra items to discuss rather than to finish early and have unstructured extra time.
- Create a short (preferably one page) document with contact information, grading policy, upcoming assignments or any other important information you would like parents to have. You may get ideas from the Sample Parent Information Document. A written version is helpful to parents, especially for those who may have difficulty understanding English. Send this document home to parents who cannot attend. Don't forget to proofread it before you make copies.
- Create a sign-in sheet that can identify the attendees in relation to their children.
- Plan what you will wear and what you need to do to make sure you look your best that evening.
- Take care of any major housekeeping chores that need to be done.
- Create a space to showcase student work or create folders of student work to share with parents. If you are comfortable using technology, a computer slide show, short video, or overhead transparencies may be effective ways of demonstrating what students are doing in your classroom.
