The purpose of homework is to reinforce classroom learning, and today, with a strong focus on testing and standards-based learning, there tends to be a strong focus on homework. You can help your students to understand the purpose of homework and to get more out of it with a few simple pointers:
  • Help your students to develop organizational skills. Set up a plan at the beginning of the year and spend some time discussing issues of procrastination, research, materials needed for homework, etc. Some studies have shown that the skills of organizing and classifying are two of the most important areas your students can develop.

  • Consider the entire homework load on your students. School-wide or faculty-wide consensus on amounts of homework can help to balance the burden.

  • Consider creating a classroom website where you post assignments. This has the advantage of making information available at all times to students who may be forgetful or negligent, and of keeping students informed of long-term assignments as well as day-to-day work. A website can also be a place for parents to check in on their child's progress and can even enable you to reduce your paperwork load, allowing some assignments to be submitted online.
