Being physically prepared involves many actions from setting your alarm clock so you arrive at school early to being physically able to keep up with the demands of your assignment and your students. Here is a handy checklist of some steps you can take to be ready to go:
Make sure (in advance) you have transportation. If you have a car, check to see that it has plenty of gas in it.
Double-check the information about the school, including directions. If you substitute frequently, write down the date and assignment when you receive it and post it in a prominent place where you can be reminded in the morning.
Pack a lunch and snack in case you don't have time to get to the cafeteria. It's a good idea to keep a few items handy for the times when you don't have much notice to pack a lunch.
Maintain a teaching wardrobe. Designate in advance a few clothing items that will always be appropriate to wear. You might even want to keep one outfit separate from your regular clothes so it is always ready. Make sure everything is clean and pressed before you go to sleep, if possible. Some substitutes even carry an extra outfit in their car "just in case."
Prepare your Substitute Success Kit.
Give yourself plenty of time. You should plan to be at the school at least a half hour before the students arrive. In addition, add a few minutes to your estimated drive time just to be sure. Nothing gets you off to a better start than arriving with a moment to catch your breath, review the materials about the school and your particular assignment, and think before jumping into your day.
