Lagniappe (LAWN-yawp) is a Creole word meaning a little something extra, an unexpected gift. As you know, sometimes it is the enjoyable surprise that makes an experience special. It usually takes a little extra thought and time, but the rewards of giving lagniappe to the substitute teacher can not only make the day, but also benefit the students in your classroom.

How does it work? You come up with an idea to show your appreciation and support with thoughtful gestures that show you care about your students and your profession.

Do you know how to operate a video camera? If so, record yourself or ask someone to record you giving a short message to your students. You can make it as creative as you want, such as asking them as if they were special agents to accept this assignment. You could also put on a coat and hat while you record the message if you will be traveling to a different part of the country. Have the videotape, VCR and television in the classroom ready to play.

Keep a large, decorated gift box with a removable lid in your classroom. When you know you are going to be absent, put in a piece of fresh fruit or a cookie for the teacher. If you want to use it for emergency absences, keep it filled with wrapped candy or change for the vending machines. You may also want to include lunch money as a special treat from you. Make sure you tell the substitute in the notes where the "treasure" is located.

Write a thank you note to the substitute. Many teachers do this in advance and include it in the regular information for the substitute. Most teachers do not take the time to write a note after the substitute completes the assignment. A sincere and specific thank you for a job well done is greatly appreciated. Your school administrator or district office will know how to deliver the note to the substitute if you do not.

Everybody needs a friend! Don't forget to provide the substitute with the names of neighboring teachers or colleagues you know will go out of their way to be helpful. It is also a good idea to name students you can count on to be responsible and accommodating to the substitute teacher.
