It is important for you to become familiar with your local school district on many levels. Whether you are part of a large school district or a small one, there are many resources available through the district that can help you to be successful.
Some critical information you need to learn includes:
- Statistics about the number of schools and students in your district
- Special induction programs for beginning teachers
- Names and contact information of district supervisors and specialists, especially those who are responsible for your school, grade level and/or subject area
- Information about the District Superintendent and other leaders, including school board members
- Programs, initiatives and organizations that support your efforts in the classroom
- Professional development opportunities
- Information about benefits for district employees
- Student test scores and school scores on statewide and national assessments
- Community organizations that routinely work with or support your school
The best source of this information and much more is your school district website. Also carefully read any newsletters, memos, handbooks or bulletin boards as informative sources of school district information. As a teacher, you are a representative and a member of both your school and your school district. Make it a habit to periodically check the district website and follow any news that pertains to your school district.
