Assessment and curriculum go hand in hand. Through the curriculum you teach, your students should experience the goals, objectives, outcomes and standards you will assess. Likewise, the curriculum you teach should be developed based on the goals, objectives and outcomes you will assess. If you really want to know if your curriculum is effective, just pay close attention to how students perform on assessments.
Throughout your lesson plans, there should be several types of assessments. They can be divided into two basic groups:
Informal Assessments
Formal Assessments
Click on each of these types for examples and more information about them.
For these very good reasons, try to use a variety of assessments in both categories.
- Different types of assessments provide you a broader perspective on your students' learning.
- Your students need the chance to become familiar and expert at several different types of assessments.
- Using varied and multiple assessments produces a more comprehensive and true grade for each student.
When you create lesson plans that include activities and instruction that meets objectives, your students will be successful no matter what type of assessment is used. More information about assessment can be found in the Assessment segment.
