Setting up your classroom is a very individual issue that is dependent on your personality and work style. Some things you should think about include:
  • Student seating - are the desks easily moved? Will students sit in rows or in groups? Are there tables in the room? What is the traffic flow? How many doors in and out of the room?

  • Your desk - is it in a location you find comfortable? Can it be moved? Do you have sufficient space? Is there a locking drawer? If you have a file cabinet, is it close to your desk?

  • Bookshelves and resource materials - are they easy to access? Are they in a logical location not in a traffic pattern? When students are accessing them will they block the view of the board?

  • Computers - how many computers do you have in your room, if any? How do you plan to use them? Can they be set up for multiple use by students? Are they in a location that is good for instruction? Are the cords out of the way?

  • Appearance - how does your room look? Is it light and bright? Does it reflect your personality or topic area? Does it provoke learning? Is it interesting and entertaining? Will students find it inviting?

  • White board and supplies - do you have the necessary supplies to use the whiteboard easily? Do you have supplies for bulletin boards or magnetic boards? Are they easily accessible and who has access?
