One of the major challenges of creating tests and other assessments for your students is to produce an assessment that is a reliable evaluation of student progress. A test is reliable if it is accurate and consistent in evaluating student achievement. Some guidelines for creating reliable assessments include making sure:
  • The test-taking directions are clear and easy to understand.

  • The objectives being tested match those you have taught.

  • Higher-order thinking skills are assessed.

  • A variety of items and types of questions are included that help meet the needs of your particular students.

  • The test does not exceed the time allotted to take it.

  • Similar question types are grouped together. This will make both taking the test and grading the test easier.

  • To use short (10-15 minute) quizzes to help prepare your students for longer tests covering more material.
